CHAPTER SIX

Harrison

I put the pin in 250, then position myself on my back, hands on the bars. I prefer free weights, but I’m in the mood to be alone so I’m using the Universal.

I picture the red pudgy face of John Daniels…such an appropriate name…and do twelve fierce reps. I leap up, take a swig from my water bottle, and towel the sweat off my face.

The President’s fitness room is impressive, thanks to George W. Bush, who came down here almost every morning. I sent him a note asking him to come down and work out with me when he’s in town, but he politely declined. Apparently doesn’t want to be seen with The Boy King, either.

Fine. Whatever.

I wish my dear sweet delicious fuck-toy was here. I’d take her, bend her over the bench, and pound her tight little body until she screams in pure delight.

A good fuck would clear my head, but this Monday morning I have to settle for the weight machines. Weekend intelligence showed a movement of trucks to the East Angara capitol from a small town in the mountains. One intrepid CIA analyst is convinced the trucks contain Unit Ten. If we had known sooner, a Special Ops force could have freed them easily but by the time the trucks reached the capitol, it was too late.

I finish my workout, shower and shave, and go back to my bedroom to dress. Then I take the daily walk with Chase to the West Wing. He leaves me in my kitchen, where Charles serves me my two boiled eggs on toast and leaves. I eat and read the Daily Briefing, which contains nothing of significance again.

At seven-thirty on Monday morning, I’m at my desk in the Oval.

At seven-thirty-one, Annalise rushes in. Behind her are two other men in suits I don’t know, Attorney General Daniels, and Chase, who signals me with his eyes that he has no clue what’s going on.

“What is this, Annalise?” I say, as I stand up.

“Sorry, Mr. President,” she says. “I don’t know. They have a warrant.”

“They? Warrant? What is this?”

Daniels is a roly-poly man, a round pudgy blond pale ball in a raincoat with thinning yellow hair and a bright red nose, still chewing gum. What’s with the fucking gum, really?

“Surprised to see me, aren’t you?” he says.

“I didn’t see you on the official White House agenda this morning, if that’s what you mean.”

“Nope. Read this.”

I take the paper he’s holding out and read it.

“It’s a subpoena, Mr. President,” he says, stretching out the word to Pres-i-dent. “We need records of all your communications for the past six months.”

I laugh and hand the paper back to him.

“Okay,” I say, shrugging my shoulders. “To be honest, I thought you were probably listening in on all of them anyway. I have nothing to hide.”

“I’m sure you don’t. That’s why we’re going to look.”

I shrug again. “Go ahead.”

He chews some more. “Fine.”

Then he storms out with the guys in suits. Chase shoots me a look and I answer.
